Saturday Selections – Newmarket & Goodwood

Newmarket

2:00 Makfi Suffolk Stakes

Fury has run well on two good handicaps this year without winning and fully deserves to win somewhere soon

Always a good race this and it’s no exception this time. Fury ran a great race in defeat last time at Newbury in the Spring Cup and goes up a furlong for the first time. The ground is right up his street but a 5lb rise makes life a little tougher. He deserves a win though and should go close to doing that. Circumvent is up 6lb after running a great race in the Winter Derby but is 4lb lower on turf. He has run well on softer ground before and here so may easily get involved. Luca Cumani always must be respected when having runners in these handicaps. He hasn’t been seen since 5th at Royal Ascot over 12f. He is now down in trip on ground he has to prove so there is more than enough ground to leave him on though early money has come in. Proponent has a great record round Newmarket but is handicapped to his best. That means he will need to improve to win but has e/w claims, 103 being a career high mark. Spanish Duke has gone well fresh before but may need to drop a few more pounds first before getting really competitive while 1m1f will also be a minimum. It will be interesting to see how Dick Doughtywylie after his poor run at Epsom on heavy. It may just have been that he hated that ground and with the ground better here then he could play a part. Tullius was pulled out last week due to ground but has gone well with cut in. However he also doesn’t look that well handicapped. MEMORY CLOTH won a Ripon handicap last time in great style for Brian Ellison but had at one time looked pretty smart when with Andre Fabre. He is up 8lb for his victory but that shouldn’t hinder more progression. The extra furlong should help and the ground is perfect and although this is a much better race, that should not stop him. I’m also keen on GRAPHIC too. He is the only 3yo in the race and ran better than his place suggested on heavy at Sandown last week. The slightly better ground will certainly suit, as will a stronger pace. I would have advised a bigger bet but I will select it when he gets onto good solid ground. Whatever happens here he is worth following on his next few starts.

Advice – Memory Cloth 3pts win @13/2 BlueSq & 888

5:30 Qipco Supports Racing Welfare Handicap

REWARDED runs for the Horses To Follow list and I’d expect a big run here. His mark of 83 looks great and he will finally face some opposition this time. He has also come in for money already too. Archbishop looks a danger if building on his two runs last year while a number of others must be brought into the equation but not many look likely to handle the conditions as well as James Tollar’s colt and little also are on a better mark.

Goodwood

2:15 Betfred The Bonus King EBF Daisy Warwick Stakes

Vita Nova has nearly a stone in hand with all of these and is actually not the worst 4/6 shot i’ve ever seen as she should win this easily. Polygon and Tameem lead the challengers in the market but i’m at a loss as to why they are 8/1 and CREME ANGLAISE is 33/1. More is to come from this horse this year and she can easily run to a mark of 100+. She should stay 1m4f and improvement may also come from running on softer ground though he was pulled out at Doncaster last week due to heavy ground.

Advice – Creme Anglaise (Horses To Follow list 2012)

2:50 Betfred The Bonus King Bingo Stakes

An interesting little handicap with a close market but i’m keen on the chances of LUI REI. He hasn’t won in the UK yet but has run some huge races in defeat. He showed a lot of promise on his first start back when running on behind Mirza over 5 on soft. He’s down 2lb for that and he should be capable of running a big race.

Advice – Lui Rei 2pts win @6/1 Bet365

4:05 Mobile Casino British Stallion Studs EBF Conqueror Stakes

Barefoot Lady looks a solid favourite for this and ran to a good solid standard last year. However even though she ran okay on her two starts on soft, she was still slightly below par and in NEUTRAFA there is a potentially classy rival to face. She was mightily impressive when winning a handicap last time at Nottingham and although much more will be needed now, the ground should be perfect and she is worth chancing. Nell Gwyn winner Esentepe got the run of the race that day and although has a 3yo allowance, will probably need to improve again. Winter’s Night is the best of the rest, with more improvement to come and on ground she has enjoyed already.

Advice – Neutrafa 2pts win @6/1 Stan James
